What this site is
nenkinrefund.com is a free guide for foreign residents of Japan. It has a calculator for the Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment (the "nenkin refund"), tools for leaving Japan and for life in Japan, and guides to the procedures around them. It is not a government service.
How the calculations work
- Employees' Pension: average standard monthly remuneration × the payment rate for your months, using the formula and rate table of the Japan Pension Service.
- National Pension: the amount per 6 months set for the fiscal year of your last payment, from the Japan Pension Service table.
- Months are counted in steps of 6, up to 60 months.
- 20.42% (income tax and the special reconstruction income tax) is deducted from the Employees' Pension part. The National Pension part is not taxed.
- Every calculation runs in your browser.
How pages are kept up to date
Facts, amounts and dates are taken from official pages of the Japan Pension Service, the National Tax Agency, the Immigration Services Agency, ministries and local governments. Each guide shows the date it was last checked against those pages. The National Pension amounts are updated every fiscal year when the Japan Pension Service publishes the new table, and the refund table is recalculated from the same data.
