What an agreement does
Japan's social security agreements have two purposes: avoiding paying into both countries' pension systems at the same time, and adding together the periods in both countries so that it is easier to meet the period needed for a pension. Japan has agreements in force with 24 countries. The agreements with the United Kingdom, South Korea, China and Italy cover only the first purpose.
The lump-sum and your periods
When you receive the Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment, all your periods before the claim stop counting as Japanese pension periods. If you already have 10 years of coverage, you qualify for a Japanese old-age pension and cannot get the lump-sum.
